Are You Decorating a Kitchen?

Are you decorating a kitchen in a brand-new house, or are you remodeling the kitchen in your present home? Either way, from selecting the material for your kitchen's countertops to selecting the wall treatment for the walls, here are some ideas that might help you.

The Countertops

Have you seen stone countertops? Maybe you've seen them in model homes or in your friends' homes and you have always known that one day you'd select them for your own kitchen. Granite is an ideal material for kitchen countertops. Besides being gorgeous, granite is easy to maintain and will last for a very long time. If you want a subtle look, consider choosing off-white or tan for the color of your stone countertops. If you want a more dramatic look, black or dark grey would be perfect. And, for an even more elegant look, consider selecting a pattern that has gold or silver as part of the design.

Another idea is to select tile for your kitchen countertops. Like stone, it will last for a long time. However, it might be a bit more trouble to maintain, as you'll have to pay extra attention to keeping the grout clean. If you have your heart set on tile countertops, think of the mood you want to set. For example, if you want a modern look in your kitchen, think of having black-and-white checkered countertops. If you want a more traditional look, select a tile color that will match the rest of your kitchen.

The Walls

Have you thought of faux painting your walls? If you are artistic, or if you are a do-it-yourself kind of person, you could faux paint the walls yourself. Think of taking a faux painting class at a paint store or even at your local library. If you aren't comfortable doing the faux painting yourself, you could hire a professional to give your walls the look of anything from weathered bricks to wooden paneling.

Another idea for the wall treatment in your kitchen is to select a basic paint color and then embellish it with stenciling. For example, if you love strawberries, choose off-white or pale yellow for the paint color, and then stencil strawberries around the top of the walls and maybe over things like copper molds and pictures. Stenciling words or sentences is another idea for your kitchen walls. For example, you could include something like Bon appetit! or The kitchen is the heart of the home over your kitchen door.
